Southern Colonies
The Southern Colonies were made up of North and South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Georgia. They were discovered by Great Britain during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Carolina's were led by a group of English noblemen. Maryland was found by George Calvert in 1632. Georgia was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe. Virginia was a English colony until 1707 when it became a British Colony. The southern colonies had warm weather and wet lands that made it easy to grow crops. Tobacco was the best crop and it brought settlers to the area. After the United States was formed, Kentucky was created from the area where the colony of Virginia once was.
